Masking fluid is used to protect those areas of the paper where the watercolor is not desired to adhere. Areas treated with masking fluid should be allowed to dry before painting. Once dried, these areas are protected and the color cannot penetrate them. The masking liquid is applied directly to the paper. It can be applied to white paper or to a previously stained area. As a latex-based substance, it is best to apply the mask liquid with an old brush or, preferably, with a spike or blade, as the latex will come off more easily. The brushes should be washed immediately in warm soapy water. Masking fluid should be removed as soon as possible after the painted area has dried. The dried liquid can be removed by rubbing with an eraser.
