Artisan is a water-soluble oil paint made from modified linseed and safflower oils. The colors have been developed to behave like regular oil paints, and to look like them. Instead of solvents such as turpentine or white spirit, the artist can use water to thin them. Painting equipment can also be easily cleaned with soap and water. Because Artisan has the same depth of color, thick buttery consistency, the same application properties and drying times, and the same lightfastness and coverage/translucency as regular oil paint, artists can use Artisan with all oil painting techniques. The colors are made using modified oils that are not water-repellent, but mix easily with water: this is the main difference between Artisan water-soluble oil paint and regular oil paints. Artisan has also developed its own range of water-soluble painting materials, so that you can use all possible traditional oil painting techniques and styles when painting - without turpentine or white spirit.

Thinning Artisan paints can be thinned with water instead of the solvent used with regular oil paints. Add water slowly, a little at a time, and mix well on the palette. If too much water is added to the paint or too quickly, some paints may "foam". By using Artisan painting materials you can avoid this phenomenon.
